Milton Hershey’s early life

In 1893, he attended the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where he was Introduced to German chocolate-making machinery. He purchased two machines and had them shipped to Lancaster. With these new machines, Milton Hershey was able to mass-produce chocolate for the first time.

In 1900, Milton Hershey founded the Lancaster Caramel Company. The company was a success, and within a few years, Hershey had factories and sales offices all over the United States. In 1903, he sold the Lancaster Caramel Company for $1 million and used the money to build a chocolate factory in Derry Township – which is now known as Hershey, Pennsylvania.
